NCEA Level 1
For most students entering Year 11 at Palmerston North Boys High school it will be their first introduction to the National Certificate in Educational Achievement or NCEA. Level one is an important stepping stone for students as they look to progress through the NCEA framework or gain a qualification to assist them with life outside the school. For those students involved with the accelerate programme, Year 11 looks to build upon progress made in Year 10. Good organisation, time management and study skills are vital components to a successful year. The school offers assistance to students in these areas through study skills courses, the Barrowclough Programme, goal setting activities and the use of the school diary.
All students are required to select six subjects from a variety of options. Compulsory subjects include English Mathematics and a combination of Sciences, either general or specialist. For many students who are unsure of the area they wish to specialise in it is advisable to select a range of options. Some courses of study in Year 11 require a satisfactory completion of the subject in Year 10.
Students sitting NCEA Level One need to gain a minimum of eighty credits including Numeracy and Literacy to progress to Level Two. Literacy consists of eight credits from English while numeracy is eight credits from Mathematics. The remaining credits can come from any of the subjects being studied.
