College House College House is the focus and strength of Palmerston North Boys' High School, which has a roll of approximately 1660. It is designed to meet the needs of teenage males and has existed for over 100 years. The hostel, with a maximum roll of 176, consists of the main block adjacent to the school playing fields on the corner of Featherston and North Streets, and Murray House, the former residence of Mr John Murray (Rector 1919-46). As a mark of respect for the former Rector, the letter M is carried by the College House sports teams. Seven Day Boarding College House offers quality accommodation and provides seven day boarding for students from a wide range of backgrounds and locations. Seven day boarding means that students remain in the hostel during the weekend unless they apply for and are granted weekend leave. Boarders are entitled to between 12 and 20 weekend leaves annually Students participate in a range of activities and team sports while pursuing study in a traditional well disciplined environment. Hostel rules are strictly enforced and there is zero tolerance of alcohol, drugs, smoking, theft or bullying.
Student welfare is the responsibility of the Hostel Manager, Matrons, and seven residential Masters who supervise daily routines, tend student concerns and dispense health needs. Although dormitories vary in size at College House, boarders can expect to be accommodated in dorms sleeping as many as 30. Bed areas are in pairs, separated by partitioning walls. A number of events during the year such as Niger House Rugby, Athletic Sports, Golf, Church and Market Days provide an opportunity for parents, family and staff to interact. In the evening students have recreation time and approximately two hours of study in school classrooms. Prep is under the supervision of Hostel Masters and Prefects. All students complete an academic school day at Palmerston North Boys' High School whilst in the afternoon they participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities offered by the school. During the weekend, boarders fulfil their extra-curricular commitments, complete hostel jobs, take leave to specific destinations in Palmerston North and attend church, visiting various places of worship on a regular basis. College House and Palmerston North Boys' High School provide an opportunity for students to grow and extend themselves in an environment that encourages participation, excellence and a sense of occasion. Prospective boarders are encouraged to return enrolment forms well in advance of their year of entry. Hostel fees are approximately $10,500 incl. G.S.T. per year for a four term year. All future boarders are interviewed and encouraged to inspect the facilities. All students are selected on their suitability for boarding at College House.
