Smallbore Shooting
The School has a long tradition of target shooting, going back to the earliest days of the School, when shooting was under the auspices of the NZ Army. In those days, boys shot with both .303 and .22 rifles.
Today, smallbore is .22 over 25 metres. We shoot at the Manawatu Range under the umbrella of the PN RSA Smallbore Rifle Club. The current programme started in 1990 and, during this time, we have won the NZSS Postal Competition and have had two shooters in the NZ SS team.
Shooters start (usually in Year 9) shooting on a box (deadrest) and, as they progress, they move onto a sling. From here, when students reach an average of approximately 90/100, they are encouraged to join one of the local clubs, where they can benefit from regular competiton, as well as coaching from some of the best shots in New Zealand.
Our annual matches are: the NZSS Postal competition, the Masterton Inter-Collegiate shoot, our own match vs Nga Tawa and PNGHS, the Manawatu SS Rep match vs Wellington and Malborough and the NZSS Championship held alternately at Blenheim and Wellington
