Shand Shield squash was played on Friday the 10th of June and was once again stacked with talent throughout the clubs, providing strong competition with placing’s within the Senior A and Senior B teams at stake. Gordon club were looking like the favourite to win for the fourth year in a row and didn’t surprise anyone to take out the title again. Solid depth throughout the team and a strong performance from Dave Bardsley helped them dominate the competition. Vernon were lucky to make the finals after a close fixture and somewhat of an upset win over Murray when Ashleigh Peterson beat James MacDougall two games to one to clinch the fixture. Kia Ora entered with a team of junior prospects and would have to be pleased with their performance, showing the potential to dominate the competition in a couple of year’s time. Unfortunately for Phoenix, who had no squash players in the club, they were forced to enter a team of tennis and badminton players. Phoenix still managed to snatch a couple of wins but were unable to secure a fixture after losing to Albion in the fifth and sixth playoffs. The end results were; Gordon 1st , Vernon 2nd , Murray 3rd Kia Ora 4th Albion 5th Phoenix 6th

The start of the 2011 Squash Season report
The first three weeks of the 2011 season has been a great start for the members of the Senior A and B squash teams with big wins in important tournaments throughout the North Island.
The Palmerston North Open bought some good results for Brandon Keenan who won division four, Regan Smith who won the special plate in the open draw, beating his 9th place seeding, and I (Sam Nash), having a good tournament with a couple of good wins.
The next and most important tournament was the Junior (under 19) North Shore Open which was attended by all members of the A team apart from Ashley Peterson who was absent on the French renaissance tour. Reagan and I were participating in the Open draw and were up against some tough competition. Regan was on form and played well all weekend finishing eighth. I had some good games also but unfortunately could not pull out wins like Regan could. Richard Franks had an amazing weekend, taking out local rivals Luke Herbert-Jones, Michael Mclean and Jake Tasker to finish fourth in division 2. Luke Herbert-Jones finished fifth in division 2.
Other highlights in smaller tournaments include Regan Smith winning the Stratford Open which was his first Open title, and I won the Danniverke B grade.
These successes early in the year are a great indication of a successful season to come. Secondary Schools nationals will be the big tournament for the senior A team. With our morning trainings and continued hard work it should be a very successful tournament for the team.
