The Ian Colquhoun Memorial Hall can accommodate close to 1800 people, is fully networked, and is used for daily assemblies, fairs, expos, indoor activities and competitions.
The Ian Colquhoun Memorial Hall is a key part of our school day and plays a core role in developing our school culture.
Assembly is held in the hall each morning and this provides an opportunity for us to collectively recognise the many and varied achievements of our young men. The Rector uses the daily assembly to provide key messages to the student body in support of our school vision and values. Each Tuesday a Prefects assembly is held. This is organised by the Head Prefect and features student presentations and performances from a variety of school musical groups and solo performers.
The Ian Colquhoun Memorial Hall is fully networked and important assemblies, such as our annual Sports an Cultural Prizegiving and ANZAC Service, are live streamed over the internet so that all members of our school community can be involved.
The Ian Colquhoun Memorial Hall is also used for fairs and expos, indoor activities and competitions.

The Speirs Centre is home to a 368 seat ‘David Syms Auditorium’, Music Centre, rehearsal and music practice rooms, as well as two classrooms, bathrooms and a kitchen.
The Speirs Centre is home to a fully functioning Music Department here at Palmerston North Boys’ High School. The Speirs Centre incorporates both individual and group rehearsal spaces, as well as two classrooms with keyboard and computer facilities.
The Speirs Centre houses the “David Syms Auditorium”, which is available for public hire. The seating capacity for this facility is 368. The facility is tiered seating facing to a central stage, along with 2 spacious dressing rooms filled with natural light, a control box, foyer, both male and female bathrooms, and a fully-equipped kitchen. The facility is suitable for hire for theatre, dance, performing arts competitions, conferences, lectures, and business events.

A wide variety of sports fields & facilities: Rugby, Football, Hockey, Tennis, Basketball, Badminton, Volleyball, Cricket, Water & Canoe Polo and Tae Kwon Do.
Rugby
Palmerston North Boys’ High School has one rugby field plus two training fields on site.
It is accompanied by a covered grandstand for spectators to watch, as well as a Sports Pavilion with two changing rooms.
Sports Development
Athletes selected into this programme will use electronic timing gates, heart rate monitors, specific lifting bars, class sets of skipping ropes, mats, jump boxes as well as all school facilities and equipment to build our future sporting stars.
Football
There is one football field plus one training field here at Palmerston North Boys’ High School.
Outdoor Cricket
We have 8 cricket nets, 2 hard surface wickets and 1 grass wicket which is all available for use for Outdoor Cricket.
Hockey
We have two artificial courts and four goals which are used in terms two and three for hockey training.
Tennis
Palmerston North Boys’ High School has eight outdoor tennis courts and a tennis Pavilion available for use.
Basketball
We have two outdoor and two indoor basketball courts here at Palmerston North Boys’ High School.
Volleyball
Palmerston North Boys’ High School has two indoor Volleyball courts which are used by our Volleyball students for practices and games.
Tae Kwon-Do
For our Tae Kwon Do students, we have gym space, bags, pads, boards and gloves available that can be used for practices and matches.
Palmerston North Boys’ High School has a 25 metre indoor heated swimming pool, with seating and both male and female changing room facilities.
Wheelchair access is available into the vicinity, and a wheelchair ramp into the pool enters at the shallow end.
The pool drops in depth from 1.2 metres to 2.5 metres over the 25 metre length.
Our Water Polo and Canoe Polo students use the pool with goals for practices and games.
Palmerston North Boys’ High School has fourteen specialised science laboratories dedicated to the Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Electronics and Horticulture Departments.
Our school prides itself on being well-resourced in the Sciences so that our young men can not only have expert teachers in front of them, but they also get to have many kinaesthetic experiences doing practicals to help with their learning.
The laboratories are all wet areas equipped with gas on tap. The Chemistry laboratories have fumehoods for those experiments that need effective venting. Having two Science technicians available to staff and therefore, the students, has meant that experiments pertaining to the curriculum are organised and administered within a short turn around time.
The Science laboratories have a dual purpose – they are classrooms as well as laboratories. This means that our young men do not have to travel far to carry out specific experiments and get information directly from their teacher. Fitted with whiteboards and on-screen projectors, the students get a taste of true differentiated learning at Palmerston North Boys’ High School.
Palmerston North Boys’ High School has four fully equipped technology workshops and two planning rooms for wood work, metal work, engineering and construction.
Palmerston North Boys’ High School has four fully equipped technology workshops specialising in metal and wood based projects and skills. All four workshops contain a diverse range of high quality tools and machinery designed to meet the diverse needs of learners and the demands of industry. Within the technology suite are two classrooms available for students undertaking theory work.
The onsite outdoor technology construction site is utilised by senior students who are studying construction. The site features a wide range of specialist tools used by those within the construction site. The site is fitted with two building platforms which students use each year as they construct removable housing.
NZCT Cricket Centre
Palmerston North Boys’ High School is home to a New Zealand-first Indoor Grass Cricket practice facility.
This facility is located on School grounds, however is owned and managed by Manawatu Cricket Association (MCA).
The NZCT Cricket Centre is the worlds first indoor, natural grass, cricket specific training facility.
The NZCT Cricket Centre is a climate controlled, retractable-roofed facility, that allows cricket players and teams of all ages and abilities the chance to train 12 months a year, no matter the weather.
The NZCT Cricket Centre is a Manawatu Cricket facility, and is available to hire for winter, pre-season, and summer training.
The NZCT Cricket Centre is a fully covered grass practice facility located on the grounds of Palmerston North Boys’ High School. This practice facility is the first of its kind in the world and we feel very fortunate to have it here in the Manawatu.
The centre was brought to life by the leadership of Pods Hood and was 10 years in the planning before finally being erected in 2014. With the centre now fully operational, numerous teams from around the local area, as well as teams from Wellington and the NZ White Ferns, have been using the facility.

Palmerston North Boys’ High School has two gymnasiums – ‘The Old Gym’ and ‘The New Gym’.
Each gymnasium is equipped with a sprung wooden floor, an indoor basketball court and changing rooms.
The New Gym holds various specific weights and cardio areas, has separate changing facilities, and is adjacent to the indoor swimming pool.
We have four indoor Badminton courts here at Palmerston North Boys’ High School, which are used by our Badminton students for practices and games.
Palmerston North Boys’ High School has a dedicated weight training facility which is located in ‘The New Gym’, adjacent to the swimming pool.
The Weights Room consists an extensive array of equipment, inclusive of cardio options and both machine and free weights.
We have six computer rooms available for classroom use and a computer network extending throughout the School.
Each room is fit with a printer, copy, fax and scanner machine.
College House has recently redeveloped many of its facilities and this has seen the completion of the award winning Hart Dining Hall (2010), the O’Connor Wing Dormitory (2011) and the Colquhoun Dormitory (2014).
Three junior dormitories were refurbished in 2013. The renovations of the Recreation Room have been completed in 2015 and now proves to be a state-of-the-art facility for our boarders to utilise in their free time.
Wi-fi is provided throughout the hostel but is turned off during the hours of sleep.
College House has beds for up to 180 young men with 9 dorms varying in size between eight to thirty beds. All dorms are of a similar layout with bed areas shared in pairs with each pair separated by partitions. Year 13 boarders reside in one to three bed “flats” contained within each of the dormitories. Some of these flats include bathroom facilities. The sleeping areas are all heated to create a comfortable environment and are cleaned every day by our cleaning staff.
Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 study is supervised by College House staff in allocated prep rooms. For Year 9, 10 and 11 these prep rooms are at school while Year 12 boarders have a dedicated prep room within the hostel. Year 13 students have study areas in their flats and follow self-directed study programmes. Year 12 students also have study areas in their bed areas for extra study requirements. Students have access to Computer Labs over at school during prep time.
The award-winning Hart Dining Hall was completed in 2010. This is a spacious area that provides ample space for all meals and other functions. Breakfast, lunch and dinner all take place in the Dining Room, 7 days of the week. Boarders return from school to have their lunch. Afternoon tea is packed by boarders at breakfast and taken to school. Meals are designed to meet the nutritional needs of active and growing teenagers.
The Conference Room is a recent addition to College House and is ideal for groups of up to 70 people. The Conference Room is used for school and hostel functions and is hired out to members of the community. This room is equipped with tea and coffee making facilities and a data projector. Catering options are available on request.
Recreation spaces have been completely renovated in 2015. The main recreation space includes a projection unit with Sky TV, as well as 4 pods of smaller TV’s for personal use. This Recreation Room also has a pool table and a table tennis table which are well utilised. A kitchenette provides the ability to make any extra snacks that boarders require outside of meal times. The “Rec Room” is a colourful and inviting environment for young men to relax in during their free time.
Year 13’s have a TV lounge complete with projected big screen SKY TV and a kitchenette.
Year 12 boarders have their own prep/recreation room complete with TV and a kitchenette.
Year 11 boarders have their own TV lounge.
Other recreation areas include tennis and basketball courts, cricket nets, covered swimming pool, BBQ and courtyard areas and the playing fields.
College House has 2 gymnasiums on site for boarders to use. These gymnasiums are inclusive of both free weights and cardio machine equipment. The Gymnasiums are able to be used during a boarder’s free time.
The ample school grounds provide opportunities for sports and other recreational activities. The location of College House provides easy access to the school gymnasiums for indoor activities and the indoor pool.
The College House BBQ and Courtyard allows the boarders to congregate over the summer months and gives them opportunities to cook for their peers.
