Year 10

The Year 10 course at Palmerston North Boys’ High School builds on the foundations laid in Year 9, with the aim of preparing the young men for the academic challenges of their N.C.E.A. studies the following year. Students choose two option subjects that they take for a full year. In addition, they do the four core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. PE and Health are compulsory. The option subjects available to students in Year 10 are as follows: Visual Arts; Horticulture; Japanese; Maori; Performance Music; Business Studies; French; English as a Second Language; Graphics; Extra English; Drama; New Zealand Studies; Workshop Wood; Workshop Metal; German; Sports Science.

The top two Year 10 Accelerate Classes do N.C.E.A Level 1 English, Mathematics and General Science, while the third Accelerate Class does N.C.E.A Level 1 Mathematics and General Science. These classes also sit IGCSE examinations in Science. Two Learning Assistance classes cater for those students who require additional help with their studies. Students in Year 10 are placed in a Form Class primarily according to their examination results from Year 9. As is the case with Year 9, examinations are an integral part of the academic programme and all students must sit two lots of examinations during the year, in all subjects. The top scholars in each Form Class and in each subject are acknowledged and receive a prize at the End of Year Academic Prize Giving.

Not only are students challenged academically in Year 10, but an important component of the year is students being involved in the Outdoor Education Programme which takes place in term four and involves a selection of over 15 camps. For many students, this is a highlight of their school year. In addition to these compulsory camps, students may apply for a position on the Tama Tu Tama Ora Programme, which is a 14 day partnership programme offered by Makahika Outdoor Pursuits Centre and Palmerston North Boys’ High School.
